(Btw we've since removed the insert and just put everything in a Plano with the cards separated by base game/big exp/another big exp. I would imagine if you bought the base game, eventually you're going to want the expansions and end up buying them as well and be kicking yourself for not just getting the AE in the beginning. Ultimately I would say if you enjoyed GT then get the AE now and add the expansions as you'd like. Also all the ship variations included with the AE are pretty neat as well. The rough roads and even Stevens cards are a diabolical addition to really knock you down when you start feeling confident about your ship building skills. We've played quite a few without expansions and just recently started adding in expansion options. The box insert separates everything nicely to keep the expansions separate until you are ready to add them in. We sprung for the AE simply because it has everything. My wife and I had a similar experience with gt at our friend/neighbors house. I was in a similar situation, and I took a blind leap and bought the big box - I'll never look back. That's all I can think of off the top of my head. Given the price of the big box being 20-30 dollars less than the price of all the sets separately, if you already know you love the game the anniversary edition is the right choice both financially and holycrapilovethisgame-wise.
